For this particular experiment, we will be focusing on the growth and development of Flemish Giants. To see this entire process from beginning to end, please follow the posts with this (above) title, which will be numbered.
Week 8: This past week was all about feed. Boy! What a crazy week it has been too.
We have discovered - via adding 2 new Flemish to our family, from Maryland - that there is "certain privileges" that the folks in the Eastern States have that we *absolutely can not* get our hands on! Briefly, the addition of these 2 new Flemish came with a bag of transitional feed, as is customary. What we did not anticipate was the reaction from ALL of our rabbits when we opened this 'bag of gold'. When I say our rabbits went NUTS over this feed - I mean day after day, rabbit after rabbit, without fail DEVOURED that feed like there was no tomorrow. In the 10+ years of combined experience with rabbits, NEVER have I seen the reaction, repeatedly, as what it is with this stuff called "Blue Seal - Bunny 16 formula". Folks! I kid you not... If you have the means of buying this stuff - DO IT!!! But... much to my *great demise*, I can not get my hands on this stuff - short of making the drive to PA to buy it. I have literally spent 4 full days on the phone and emailing the CO's and a countless amount of feed dealers. The *only* way I can get this is to special order 10 bags at a time, at $20 per bag. Even if I had $200, I dont have the place to store 500lbs of feed, and even if I did, at this point it would go bad before it would all be used. To say that I am upset over this does not begin to touch how I feel!! Not to mention the utter disappointment all of our rabbits are now living with, beings that the bag of transitional feed is gone. We have even resorted to buying everything we can get our hands on to add into the Rowe's pellets that we use, to try to get them any where near as excited about eating. Im talking everything - spinach, parsley, dandelion sugar-free, un-frosted shredded wheat, sweet potato, raisins, papaya. Nothing! Now, granted, our rabbits are in good flesh condition and they do eat the Rowe's... but they do not inhale it & empty their bowls day after day like they do with the Blue Seal. I can honestly say, at this point, we ARE actually considering making the 5-hour trip to PA to buy 5 bags at a time, then mix that into the Rowe so that it will last longer & we'll have storage for it.
(Good heavens have mercy! I do believe we have lost our ever-lovin' minds!!!)
.... Stay tuned for more next week!
